Avatar In Need – Hurricane Harvey Relief
Certain things are true in life. One being, you can’t predict the weather. This summer we’ve seen devastating hurricanes ravage Texas and Florida. To this day, many residents in these states are without the necessities they require to live (shelter, food, clean water and power). Although local and federal agencies are working around the clock to provide relief to many impacted, some are outside the declared emergency zones to qualify for FEMA help. This hits home for us at AERIE Fund. Here’s why:
Amber lives in Grimes County, TX, with her two beautiful daughters.
Hurricane Harvey literally destroyed everything she owns (her home, her vehicle, and 99% of her belongings). You can see from the pictures below, the savage winds and rain destroyed her roof, and the rainwater decimated the interior of her home.
Amber lives in Grimes County, TX, that is just outside of the declared federal disaster (emergency) zone. Those who are outside of the zone, do NOT qualify for federal assistance (FEMA).
An Avatar In Need
Amber is a disabled, single mother, who is now homeless due to the devastation of the Harvey. Thankfully, Amber is able to count on the support of her friends to provide her family with a place to stay while she picks up the pieces. In her spare time, Amber is a crafter and sells her goods at local renaissance faires. She is also a gamer. She has recently joined the Shroud of the Avatar community as the character named Sansa Spirituality. She was turned onto the game by long-time community member, Brazen Spirituality.
Amber and Brazen contacted the AERIE Fund to see if we could help (after all, its what we do – gamers helping gamers). We’ve worked with Amber to verify her hardship and have pledged our support of $1000 to her YouCaring.com campaign. She is seeking $3000 in total, so she can find a new home for her family and start over.
We encourage our supporters to visit her YouCaring.com campaign, read more about Amber’s story and pledge your support to help, if able. Together, we can help a fellow Avatar get the fresh start she deserves after the storm.

“Firstly let me sincerely thank you for your time and consideration of my plight. My name is Amber, gaming in SOTA as Sansa Spirituality. When the storm was over and the flood water receded enough to get back to our home, we expected our things would be fine, if a bit blown about, from all the reports we had from people. But we were not so lucky. We gathered what seemed most salvageable and returned to Brazen’s house to try to find out what our options might be with FEMA, and figure out what is next. We quickly learned that even though the Governor had declared our county a disaster area, that did not help individuals in any way. It only allowed certain things to happen in the government like civilian rescue crews to be formed and such. But for recovery, it does us no benefit. We can not even seem to identify any sort of free refuse removal for Grimes, and so we expect we will actually have to pay to have our most valuable possessions hauled off to the dump. Thankfully Brazen and her family have been ever so kind as to allow us to stay until we can figure something out.
We basically lost our trailer, our temporary shack, our furniture and our car. Because I am disabled in multiple manners, I cannot work a normal 40 hour job, even on my best days, but I also do not have the means to even attempt to qualify for SSI disability. I work at home creating crafts sold at renaissance festivals and work as a sales assistant 2 days a week when local festivals are going on. I have no method or resources to try to recover from the devastation Harvey bestowed upon our small lives.”
THANK YOU, EVERYBODY!
